The phrase works with Google Home does a lot of hiding. Two locks can both carry it and need completely different things from you: one wants nothing but your Wi-Fi password, the other wants a hub you do not own yet.
So rather than a list of model names that will be out of date by next spring, here is the thing that does not go out of date: the four routes a lock can take to reach Google Home, how to tell which one you are looking at, and what you can actually do once it is connected.
The four routes
Every smart lock that appears in the Google Home app got there one of these ways.
1. Wi-Fi, straight to the manufacturer’s cloud
The lock has Wi-Fi built in, connects to your router, talks to the manufacturer’s servers, and Google talks to those servers. You link the two accounts once in the Google Home app and it appears.
Simplest to set up, and the option to pick if you want to buy one box and be done. Two things to know. Your Wi-Fi has to reach the door properly, which in apartments and older houses with thick walls is less certain than people assume. And if the manufacturer’s cloud goes down, the Google side stops working, even though the lock itself is fine and your keypad still opens the door.
2. Bluetooth, plus a bridge
The lock only speaks Bluetooth, which is short range and battery friendly. To reach the internet it needs a small plug in bridge somewhere in the home. August works this way with its Connect bridge, and SwitchBot with its hubs.
Check whether the bridge is in the box or sold separately, because this is where the price of a cheap lock quietly doubles. The advantage is real though: the lock’s radio only has to reach a plug in the hallway, not your router two rooms away, and battery life is usually better than Wi-Fi models.
3. Matter, over Thread or Wi-Fi
Matter is the newer standard that lets a lock talk to Google, Apple and Amazon without a separate integration for each. Locks that use it connect either over Wi-Fi or over Thread, a low power mesh.
The part people miss: Matter needs a controller in your home, and Thread additionally needs a border router. In Google’s world that means a compatible Nest speaker, display, or streaming device. If you own none of those, a Matter lock is not going to appear in the Google Home app no matter how many times you rescan. Check Google’s current list of supported hub devices against what is actually plugged in at your house before ordering.
Matter is where the market is heading, and if you are buying now with a few years in mind it is the route that ages best.
4. Z-Wave or Zigbee, through a third party hub
Google does not speak Z-Wave or Zigbee. A lock using either needs a hub that does, such as SmartThings, Hubitat or Home Assistant, and that hub then presents the lock to Google.
It works, and it is the most reliable option in the long run because nothing depends on the lock manufacturer’s cloud. It is also the most work, and not what most people want for a single lock. If you already run one of those hubs, you knew that. If you do not, pick another route.
How to check a specific lock in two minutes
Product pages are written to sell, so read them in this order:
- Find the connectivity line in the specifications, not the marketing copy. You want the actual words Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Thread, Matter, Z-Wave or Zigbee. If the page only says smart or app enabled, that is the answer to a different question.
- If it says Bluetooth and nothing else, look for the bridge, and check whether it is included.
- If it says Matter or Thread, check what Google hub it needs and whether you own one.
- If it says Z-Wave, check which hub is doing the bridging.
- Then, and only then, look for the Works with Google Home badge. Treat it as confirmation, not as an explanation.
One more habit worth having: the same lock family often ships in several radio variants under nearly identical names, and the wrong one will not connect to anything you own. Yale’s Assure line, for example, uses swappable modules, so the model number matters more than the product name. Read the SKU on the box, not the headline on the listing.
What you can actually do once it is connected
Less than the adverts suggest, and that is by design.
You can lock the door by voice. Ask Google to lock the front door and it locks, no questions asked, because locking a door is not a security risk.
Unlocking is deliberately awkward. Google requires verification for voice unlocking, typically a PIN you say out loud, and a number of lock manufacturers disable voice unlock altogether. This annoys people, and it should not. Anyone shouting through a letterbox at a speaker in your hallway is exactly the scenario the restriction exists for. If unlocking without touching anything is the goal, that is what the app, the keypad or auto unlock on approach is for, not the assistant.
You can see the door’s status in the Home app and on a display, which turns out to be the feature people use most. Not unlocking from the sofa, just checking at midnight whether the door is locked without getting up.
You can use the lock in automations, with the important limitation that unlocking is usually blocked there too. Lock everything at 11pm is fine. Unlock when my phone gets home is generally not available through Google, and where it exists it lives in the lock manufacturer’s own app instead.
When it does not show up
Roughly in the order these actually cause problems.
You are on the wrong Google account. The account in the Home app on your phone has to be the one the lock account is linked to. Households with two adults and three Google accounts run into this constantly.
The lock never got onto your network. Many locks and bridges only join 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, and modern routers hand out one combined network name for both bands. If setup keeps failing at the network step, that is usually why. Splitting the bands temporarily, or using your router’s guest or 2.4 GHz only network for setup, fixes it.
The Matter hub is missing or asleep. A Matter lock with no compatible Google hub in the house will pair to nothing. Confirm the hub device is on Google’s supported list and is powered up and updated.
Signal at the door. Front doors are usually the worst spot in the house for radio: far from the router, often behind metal, sometimes in a concrete stairwell. A lock that pairs happily on the kitchen table and then drops out once fitted is telling you about your Wi-Fi, not about itself. Move the bridge closer, or choose Thread or Bluetooth plus a nearby bridge rather than Wi-Fi at the lock.
Firmware. Update the lock in its own app before troubleshooting anything in Google Home. Matter support in particular has arrived on several locks through firmware after launch, which means an old unit sitting in a warehouse may not have it yet.
Which route to choose
If you want the least thinking and your Wi-Fi is solid at the door, take a Wi-Fi lock.
If your door is far from the router, or you rent and want a lock that only replaces the interior thumbturn, take Bluetooth plus a bridge. That combination also happens to be the one that works best in apartments, for the reasons covered in the renters guide.
If you already own a recent Nest display or streaming device, or you expect to add more smart home gear over the next few years, take Matter. It is the only route that does not depend on one manufacturer keeping its cloud service alive.
If you run SmartThings or Home Assistant already, use Z-Wave and ignore all of the above.

Common questions
Do I need a Google Nest hub for a smart lock?
For a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth lock with a cloud integration, no. Your phone and the Google Home app are enough. For a Matter or Thread lock, yes, you need a compatible Google device acting as the hub, and for Thread specifically that device also has to be a Thread border router.
Can I unlock my door with my voice?
Sometimes, and with verification. Google requires a PIN for voice unlocking, and some lock makers switch the feature off entirely on their side. Locking by voice always works. If your household wants keyless entry, plan around a keypad or the app rather than the assistant.
Does it still work if the internet goes down?
The lock keeps working as a lock. Keypad, key and Bluetooth from a phone standing next to it generally keep functioning, because those do not need the internet. What stops is anything remote: voice control, checking the status from work, and codes that need to sync. This is a good argument for keeping a physical key or a keypad code that lives on the lock itself rather than in a cloud account.
Will a lock that works with Alexa also work with Google Home?
Often but not always. Cloud integrations are built separately for each platform, so a lock can support one and not the other. Matter locks are the exception, since the point of Matter is that a single device works with all the major platforms. Check the box for both badges rather than assuming.
The short version
Ignore the badge and find the radio. Wi-Fi means check your signal at the door. Bluetooth means check whether the bridge is included. Matter means check you own a Google hub. Z-Wave means you need a third party hub and probably already know it. Everything else about Google Home compatibility follows from that one line in the spec sheet.
